I thought about doing that too, since I have lots of scrap wood, but I had a problem figuring out how to keep the reducer affixed to the hive (didn't really want to screw it or drive nails). The angle aluminum stays put with thumbtacks. But it has the same effect.<br /><br />The spacing of the nails doesn't look to need to be too exact - as long as the bees can fit in (and the mice can't).<br /><br />What I am doing this year is the same as I did last year, and both hives came through.
